In Focus: At home workouts

Author Editor - 2 minute read

We're all currently housebound, and about to go stir crazy. That's where exercise comes in.

Now, more than ever, being healthy and happy is our number one priority. We've been told for years that exercise will keep us strong and calm, providing us with all those good endorphins and a positive mindset. Whether that's going for a run or a cycle, some of the ways you can actually get outside, or practicing yoga at home, there's something for everyone.

Here are our top tips for what to wear and what to do to start exercising at home.

Be comfortable

The perfect exercise gear is notoriously difficult to find. Leggings have to fit perfectly, be stretchy, breathable, and comfortable. It's a tall order, I know, but we think we've found the perfect pairs. Grey and cropped, or black with sports-luxe mesh accents, there's something for everyone.

For Yoga or Pilates in the comfort of the living room, we're firm believers in looking the part to feel the part. Putting on your workout gear instantly differentiates the activity from the rest of your day.

Whilst the outfit isn't everything, it certainly helps. We definitely feel more motivated to do some exercise when it's an excuse to try out some new clothes, because who wouldn't want to do that?

What works for you?

Having loud fast music reverberating through your eardrums doesn't always help.
Sometimes, a podcast or an audiobook is exactly what you need to listen to. That way, there's no pressure to keep your steps in time with the music, and no need to go for a fast-paced workout with the change of track. So, for a more relaxed approach to exercise, try timing your runs by podcast, ignoring the distance, and don't record your speed.

That probably goes against every exercise advice you've ever heard. But, at this moment in time, when indoor exercise is our activity of choice, you have to take your entertainment from something other than a change in view or surroundings. So, if you're a yoga expert, have your pilates routine down to a T, or know exactly what to do with your HIT workout, try picking something different to listen to to keep your exercise time feeling fresh.

No Such Thing As A Fish is a great go-to podcast for a fun 40 minute podcast of weird and wonderful facts to keep you going during a workout.

Follow Tutorials

We know, sometimes Youtube tutorials can feel impossible. There's so much to choose from, and at the moment Gyms are taking it upon themselves to offer up free classes for you to watch and workout to.

Psycle London are running a variety of classes that you can do from the comfort of your own home on their Instagram stories, and  have everything from Barre to Strength and Yoga classes to keep you entertained in your work from home breaks. However, if you prefer to head to Youtube for your classes, yoga with Adriene is a firm favourite that never lets us down.

Create a productive space

Whilst everything else helps, we've found that the most important thing with home workouts is creating a space that makes you feel comfortable and productive. That can mean investing in a yoga mat and gym equipment, but for those of us with a smaller area, small mood-boosting furnishings help most.

Grab a wooden stool  to double as a seat and a workout essential, holding the laptop at a perfect eye level for virtual instructors; a clock gives a vague idea of how long you have left of Pilates before the next conference call. Bringing candles into your space also helps, giving you time to cool down and relax, especially after a meditative session.

Now it's time to put everything into practice, good luck.
