Styling tips: Layers in Summer

Author Emily Pywell - 2 minute read

When the sun is shining and the draws grow longer, the word “layering” might feel more suited to winter wardrobes. But mastering how to layer in summer is the sartorial secret to staying stylish and comfortably cool – yes, both are possible.

Whether you’re heading to brunch, commuting to the office, or dancing your way through a garden party, summer layering offers versatility, polish and a touch of breeze-catching sophistication. Here’s how to do it à la mode

LIGHT FABRICS

Breathable fabrics are your best friend, all summer long. Think cotton, linen and viscose – natural fibres that feel light on your skin. These materials help regulate temperature while adding subtle texture to your look. Try a linen blazer over a cotton midi dress - the structured layer adds refinement, while the breathable weave keeps things fresh.

GO SLEEVELESS

Gilets, waistcoats and utility vests are the way to go. Neutral tones add structure without bulk, and are versatile to complement and complete every ensemble. Layer them over a tank top or silk blouse for a tailored finish that’s suited to both work and play days.

DOUBLE DOWN DRESSES

Try layering a slip dress over a fitted t-shirt, or a pinafore over a bandeau top. It’s playful, unfussy, and oh-so-90s – just the right amount of nostalgia. Choose a silk slip with a subtle sheen, or a cotton sundress with delicate embroidery for a refined take.

SHEER GENUIS

Sheer styles create dimension without adding heat, think mesh tops, organza shirts or lace layers. These see-through styles invite a little mystery and a lot of play to your outfits. Drape a sheer shirt over a matching camisole and tailored shorts, taking you from coffee runs to park picnics.

GETTING SHIRTY

Your crisp oversized shirt isn’t just a cover-up, it’s a summer layering staple. Wear it unbuttoned over a crop top, tied at the waist over a maxi dress, or loosely draped off the shoulder. A shirt offers protection from direct sun and unexpected breezes, as well as keeping your look relaxed and effortlessly styled.

JACKET UP

Whether it’s a trusty denim jacket, a modish bomber or a kimono-inspired wrap, light outerwear can pull your whole look together. It also makes your outfit office-appropriate without sacrificing comfort. When the sun dips below the horizon, you can also throw it over your shoulders like a cape for chic power-dressing.

 PLAY WITH PROPORTIONS

Summer layering is all about balance. Combine fitted with floaty, short with long, or cropped with oversized to add intrigue. A longline waistcoat over a mini dress, a cropped cardigan with wide-leg trousers – the combinations are endless, and the effect is always considered.

Knowing how to layer in summer isn’t just about dressing, it’s about expressing. Light, elegant layers allow you to adapt to the day’s rhythm without ever compromising your look. Whether it’s a strategically placed shirt, a hint of sheer, or a tailored gilet, each piece tells a story – and you’re the main character.

So embrace the layers, and let summer be your most stylish season yet.
