Menswear Inspiration: From the ‘Eye of Bamako’

Author Editor - 1 minute read

As summer approaches (we hope), we’re reflecting the energy of a new season in our wardrobes. Cue clashing prints, lightweight fabrics and plenty of colour.

Inspiring this season’s bold approach is an artist known for his lively photography – Malick Sidibé. Popular in the 1960’s, Sidibé grew to be regarded as one of Mali’s most famous photographers.

Known as the “Eye of Bamako”, the village where he was born, Sidibé portrayed the lives of Malians in the wake of the country’s independence in 1960, capturing local life in dance halls, parties, the street and his own studio. He travelled between parties to capture the nightlife, photographing young Malians dancing. Black and white images are alive with movement as well as with texture and patterns in the clothes worn by his subjects.

The Malian artist is known for his use of patterns in his work, deliberately clashing prints on clothes and backdrops to bring life to the black and white images.

These prints have been a key source of inspiration for our latest collection. Mixing floral patterns with classics like polka dots, stripes and checks all on a palette of rich, bright tones (daring orange, anyone?), Sidibé’s influence on every piece is clear.

Take your cue from his photos and infuse your wardrobe with energetic, eye-catching prints. Think floral polo shirts with a seersucker suit, gingham over stripes and a fresh palette to bring it all together. The palpable energy evoked by his photography is mirrored in our SS18 collection, where a spirited sense of youthfulness drives each piece.
