They are only shirts, so how come so many of you get it so, so wrong. An oversized collar here, a cheap looking stripe there, an untucked/too tight/offensively printed mess over there. Shirts are so easy. Once you get yourself buttoned up, you can roll the sleeves up for casual, down for smart. Stick on a tie for smart, unbutton the collar (not too far there Mario) for casual.
French Connection have stacks of them. Stacks I tell you. So let’s narrow it down. For work wear, say under a suit, or paired with smart trousers, keep it simple. A narrow stripe under a charcoal, black or navy suit (pick your colours to match) is confident without being cocky. The double stripe of the Venger Shirt shirt works well under a charcoal suit, or with dark trousers. Note how the collar is small, not reaching to greet the armpits – very important. Meanwhile Ombre Shirt works in a similar way, and would look great under a dark overcoat or jacket.

Casual shirts are sometimes harder, for you don’t want to look like a city boy who is getting his first pint in after 15 hours in the office. Nor do you want to mirror the Top Gear guys in bad shirts and jeans. Avoid stripes and opt for colour or detail.
A bib-front shirt like the Darn Shirt should be celebrated, not frowned upon. Wear with battered cords and blouson-type Vigilant Jacket and ALWAYS with casual trainers (NOT sports ones). Ah, and then the colour. Plaid is everywhere and can’t (and shouldn’t) be avoided. Shady Shirt in vivid turquoise and black needs to be experimented with. Buy slightly over-sized (tight plaid is difficult to justify), roll up the sleeves, wear an old white vest underneath (only visible at the collar), pair with faded denim and casual trainers and you will fit right in with those trendster bands that stare out of every music magazine. They do look good though.
